Dulles International Airport History.
The Dulles International Airport was built in order to satisfy the growing demands for air transportation. After WWII, the Washington National Airport, today known as the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, was the only airport that served the National Capital area. A 10,000-acre stretch of Virginia farmland straddling Northern Virginia’s Loundoun and Fairfax Counties was chosen as the site for the new airport as was a sleek modern design plan created by world renowned architect, Eero Saarinen. After four years of construction, the Dulles International Airport, named after former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, opened on November 19, 1962.
